Off the beach, away from the privacy of a lush jungle, a modern beach house stands on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Created by Shaun Lockyer Architects, Arakoon is a premier oceanfront home with three levels, which is located in the coastal dunes next to Noosa National Park. The design of the stone and concrete house was inspired by the valleys of Heaven’s Caves, Devil’s Kitchen, and Lions’ Rock which lie north of the site. Solid and narrow spaces are combined with open, open spaces to create juxtaposition and heighten architectural experiences. Strong, tactile materials fit the context. Granite, weathered timber, and concrete spread from the outside to the interior walls and floors, blurring the boundaries.
Located in the traditional lands of Kabi Kabi and Jinibara, the Arakoon Residence towers over sand dunes to achieve the best views of the Sunshine Coast. Its concrete, brutal-like exterior pushes long, linear streaks into the clear blue skies of Queensland, Australia. Dense shrubs and trees soften the aesthetic and sympathetically integrate it into the landscape.
The clean modern house exterior makes an elegant contrast with the rolling terrain of the site. At the back of the house, the architecture has a strong presence as it boldly surveys the shoreline.
Healthy green lawns cover the house’s porches, which are anchored by wide white concrete borders and rustic stone walkways. Glass balustrades clearly run along the perimeter, leaving the view of the shimmering ocean unobstructed.
At the front of the house, the linear concrete architecture is much less than imposing. Here, it looks like a one-story structure with a large parking garage. Plants shed from shallow remnants to soften the brutal aesthetic.
The persistence of raw concrete, natural stone and wood elements in the interior of the house blurs the distinction between what is indoors and what is outside. Rock walks flow straight from the porch to the home’s atrium in one sweeping line.
A concrete pergola filters sunlight around the terraces and windows of the house, providing shaded outdoor areas and cooler indoor rooms. Stark black window frames and doors intersect lightly bare concrete and stone walls to achieve a contemporary presentation.
The clean architectural lines and simple color palette evoke a calm and contemplative aesthetic befitting the cheerful location. High walls surround the property to ensure complete privacy for its residents and their neighbors,
On the rustic stone-floor porch, there’s an outdoor dining table under the top of the second floor. An outdoor fireplace is set into a stone wall at the edge of the outdoor dining area, encouraging outdoor sociability into the night.
The stone-clad courtyard is home to the barbecue. Here, homeowners can cook with smoky barbecue flavours. The outdoor cooking area is accessed directly from the open plan living room. Within the living space is a fully equipped and spacious kitchen with a long dining island.
A gray sectional sofa hugs the lounge area in a conversation arrangement. There are a couple of modern coffee tables in front of the sofa, ready to hold drinks and snacks.
Rectangular dining table pushes up against an edge-to-edge window, where banquette seating is built against the frame. A trio of dining room pendant lights hang a sculptural arrangement along the wooden table.
Just outside the living room, the design of the small pool rushes against the window glass.
A stone patio provides a fresh breeze in the living room. It is also a connected space that connects different areas of the house. The beautiful tree makes a stunning centerpiece in the yard.
A small patio connects the main open-plan living space with a much smaller TV room. The warm TV room is darkened down to allow a better view of the screen.
A driveway patio extends to the side of the pool design. Beautiful starting stones spread on the surface of the water.
Patio areas help stabilize the house in its natural location.
The house unfolds as a series of spatial and volumetric architectural moments that keep the eye wandering and fascinate the mind.
The glass balustrades and exterior windows were carefully aligned to ensure the open flow of visible elements from one volume to the next.
Outdoor furniture keeps it low on the bedroom balconies for immersing beneath the gorgeous coastal panorama.
Concrete bedrooms are covered in natural golden wood for a warm look and texture that complements the sandy beach outside the balcony. Roof-mounted spotlights dotted the concrete ceiling. The master bedroom is a large space with a wonderful balcony area. Modern artwork cheerfully colors the neutral-toned décor scheme.
The bedroom furniture is simple, with a casual dressed bed and a simple bedroom chair. Bedside tables and a side table provide practical storage and surface space for personal items. Modern wall sconces provide reading light alongside pillows and a ceiling fan that cools the air.
Inside the bathroom, natural stone continues to accent the rustic walls and floor. A linear vanity unit, unique vase, and freestanding bathtub add contemporary design.
Apart from the master bedroom, the sleeping quarters are small in size. This compact size is more than suitable for sleeping, and it can be cooled easily on the adjoining patio.
